The Smoke Grenade is a rare quick-use grenade that creates a thick smoke cloud when it hits the ground. The smoke lasts for about 20 seconds and covers a 7.5 meter radius. During that time, visibility inside the cloud is very low for both ARC enemies and other players.

In general, most players treat the Smoke Grenade as a positioning and survival tool, not as a damage item. It does not hurt enemies directly. Its value comes from blocking line of sight and giving you time to move, heal, loot, or escape.

Because it weighs only 0.2 and stacks up to 5, it fits easily into most loadouts.

When do most players actually use Smoke Grenades?

Escaping bad fights

Usually, Smoke Grenades are used when a fight is going wrong. If you get surprised by ARC units or another Raider team, throwing smoke between you and them can break visual contact. Most enemies will stop firing once they lose sight, at least for a few seconds.

In practice, this often gives enough time to:

  • Sprint to cover

  • Change elevation

  • Exit the area entirely

Most players do not throw smoke at their own feet unless they are already taking heavy fire. Instead, they throw it slightly ahead or between themselves and the threat.

Crossing open areas safely

In general, open terrain is where players die the fastest. Smoke Grenades help a lot when you need to cross:

  • Roads

  • Open courtyards

  • Exposed loot zones

Most experienced players throw smoke first, then move through it immediately. Waiting too long wastes the duration. The 20-second timer sounds long, but it passes quickly once combat pressure starts.

Reviving teammates

Revives are risky in Arc Raiders because players are exposed for several seconds. Smoke is commonly used to cover revives, especially in PvP-heavy areas.

Usually, one player throws the smoke while the other starts the revive immediately. If you wait until after the smoke spreads fully, you often lose valuable time.

How effective is Smoke against ARC enemies?

Does smoke block ARC vision?

Yes, in most cases. ARC enemies rely heavily on line of sight. When smoke blocks that, they often:

  • Stop shooting

  • Reposition

  • Switch to patrol behavior

However, smoke does not erase threat instantly. If an ARC unit was already attacking, it may continue firing blindly for a short time. Most players treat smoke as a delay, not full protection.

Does smoke affect all ARC units the same way?

In general, lighter ARC units are easier to confuse with smoke. Heavier or elite units may still track sound or movement. Most players assume smoke buys seconds, not safety.

Because of this, many players combine smoke with:

  • Sprinting

  • Sliding

  • Changing elevation

Standing still inside smoke usually gets you killed.

How do other players react to Smoke Grenades?

PvP behavior around smoke

Most players are cautious around smoke clouds. In PvP, smoke usually signals:

  • A revive attempt

  • An escape

  • A reposition

Some aggressive players will push into smoke, but most do not do it blindly. Sound becomes very important here. Footsteps, reloads, and healing sounds can give you away.

In general, experienced players do not shoot randomly into smoke unless they know exactly where the enemy is.

Common mistakes players make with smoke

Based on common behavior, these mistakes show up often:

  • Throwing smoke too late

  • Standing still inside smoke

  • Using smoke in very small rooms

  • Forgetting enemies can flank around it

Smoke works best in medium-sized outdoor or semi-open spaces.

How long does the smoke really last in real fights?

On paper, the duration is 20 seconds. In real matches, most players feel it is closer to 10–12 useful seconds.

Why? Because:

  • Enemies reposition quickly

  • Players move out of the smoke early

  • Combat pressure forces decisions fast

Most players treat the smoke as a short window, not a full pause button.

How do players usually get Smoke Grenades?

Scavenging vs crafting

You can find Smoke Grenades while scavenging, but most players rely on crafting once they unlock the blueprint.

To craft one Smoke Grenade, you need:

  • 14x Chemicals

  • 1x Canister

Crafting can be done at:

  • Utility Station 1

  • Workbench

The blueprint is locked and must be learned first. Apollo sells it, so most players unlock it fairly early if they like utility items.

Is crafting worth it?

In general, yes. Smoke Grenades are one of the most reliable utility items in the game. Most players keep at least one or two in their loadout once they can craft them consistently.

If resources are tight, some players recycle unused grenades. Recycling returns:

  • 2x Chemicals

  • 1x Canister

Salvaging gives:

  • 3x Chemicals

Most players recycle only when inventory space matters.

How many Smoke Grenades should you carry?

There is no single correct number, but most players follow these patterns:

  • Solo players: usually 1–2

  • Duo or squad players: usually 2–3

Because they stack up to 5 and weigh very little, carrying more is not a big penalty. Still, many players prefer to save space for ammo or healing items.

How does Smoke Grenade compare to other grenades?

Smoke Grenades are very different from damage grenades. In general:

  • Frag grenades are for clearing enemies

  • Smoke grenades are for controlling space

Most experienced players value smoke more for survival than for kills. You rarely win fights directly with smoke, but you often avoid losing fights because of it.

Why do some players always carry Smoke Grenades?

In practice, smoke covers mistakes. Missed shots, bad positioning, or unexpected enemy spawns can all be corrected with a well-timed smoke throw.

Some players mention availability discussions online, including phrases like cheap ARC Raiders items available on U4N, but in actual gameplay, most veterans focus more on learning when and where to use smoke than on how they obtained it.

Final thoughts from long-term play

After many hours, most players agree on a few things:

  • Smoke Grenades save runs more often than they secure kills

  • Timing matters more than placement

  • Moving immediately after throwing smoke is critical

In general, if you are dying often while looting or rotating, adding Smoke Grenades to your loadout usually improves survival. They are simple, reliable, and useful in almost every situation when used with intent.
